Editor’s Message

We feature two articles, two book reviews, and a response in our third MTO volume of 2006:

Ross Duffin reassesses the application of Just tuning in the performance of Renaissance music. In “Just Intonation in Renaissance Theory and Practice,” he explores principles of just intonation through aural renderings of passages by the 16th-century mathematician, Giovanni Battista Benedetti, and studies tunings in a recording by the Hilliard Ensemble performing Thomas Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah. Also included are exercises to familiarize musicians with the kinds of adjustments necessary to sing or play in Just intonation.

In “Contextual Drama in Bach,” James Sobaskie applies the Schoenbergian concept of musical problem within a Schenkerian approach to study purely musical drama and tonal process in two Bach works: the St. Matthew Passion chorale Ich bin's, ich sollte büßen and the G-sharp minor Prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Vol. I.

Maureen A. Carr contributes a response to David H. Smyth in his review of Stravinsky's Histoire du soldat: A Facsimile of the Sketches (A-R Editions, 2005) in MTO Volume 12.2.

Tim S. Pack reviews Syntagma musicum III by Michael Praetorius, translated and edited by Jeffery T. Kite-Powell (Oxford University Press, 2004).

Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith reviews Tim J. Anderson, Making Easy Listening: Material Culture and Postwar American Recording (University of Minnesota Press, 2006).
