POSITION/RANK:  Assistant Professor, tenure track

QUALIFICATION:  Basic:  Ph.D. in music theory, with research emphasis in
one or more of the following areas:  20th-century theory and analysis;
tonal (Schenkerian) analysis Desirable:  Publications in areas of 
specialization;  College/university level teaching experience

DUTIES:  Teach theory to undergraduates and graduates.  Supervise teaching
assistants and graduate research.  Serve on graduate comprehensive
examination committees and advise students.

Florida State University

Position:  Composer (with expertise in electronic composition)/Theorist

Salary/rank:  Assistant professor, tenure-track position; salary
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include individual instruction
in traditional and electronic composition, and core curriculum courses
in theory.

Qualifications: Doctorate preferred; teaching experience in
composition and theory.

Institution: The Florida State University is a comprehensive research
institution of 16 colleges and schools with 1,500 faculty serving a
student body of 30,000.  The School of Music, with 80 faculty and over
950 students, offers a wide range of professional degrees in music,
baccalaureate through doctorate including the B.M., M.M., and D.M. in
Composition, and the B.M., M.M., and Ph.D. in Theory.

The University is situated in Tallahassee, Florida's beautiful, wooded
capital city, with an area population of over 225,000.  Located in the
"Big Bend" area of northern Florida, Tallahassee enjoys a mild change

Knox College

The Department of Music invites applications for a
full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Music
Theory/Keyboard, effective September 1, 1998.  Primary
responsibilities include the instruction of the music theory sequence.
Desirable secondary areas are music history, private piano teaching,
and accompanying.  Knox is an independent, private, highly selective
liberal arts institution with a diverse student body and a strong
commitment to undergraduate teaching.  Doctorate required. (ABD
candidates who expect to complete their dissertations by September 1
will also be considered.)  Demonstrated success teaching at the
college level preferable.

Brock University, Department of Music

Brock University, Department of Music, invites applications for a
probationary tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level,
effective July 1, 1998, subject to final budgetary approval.

Applicants should have a completed PhD in musicology or theory;
preference will be given to those able to offer another area of
specialization, possibly including performance or composition.
Applicants should have a record of, and potential for, continuing
research and publication, demonstrated excellence as an instructor and
effective interpersonal and administrative skills. The ideal candidate
will possess a range of abilities to support a diverse and developing
curriculum.

Duties: to teach in several areas of the music program, possibly
including history, theory, composition and arranging, musicianship,
music appreciation or applied music, dependent upon qualifications and
needs of the program; to actively engage in research specialization;
to participate in curriculum development and routine administrative
tasks of the department, including recruitment and promotion of the
department.

The Department of Music has over 50 majors in the six programs leading
to the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music and
over 300 enrolments in music courses.  Small classes provide a
learning environment in which students can participate fully and
develop into literate and versatile musicians.

Eastman School of Music, Department of Musicology

Position: Musicologist, full-time, tenure-track.

Responsibilitites: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise
dissertations, contribute to the discipline through scholarship and
research, participate in the musical and intellectual life of a
comprehensive music school.

Rank: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Qualifications: Primary scholarly specialization in Western music
before 1750; a secondary interest is desirable in one or more of the
following areas and repertories: performance practice, American
musics, popular musics, jazz, world musics, ethnomusicology.  Evidence
of, or potential for, scholarly achievement on an international level;
Ph.D. completed by September 1998.  Demonstrable excellence in
teaching.

The College of William and Mary
The Department of Music invites applications for a position in Music
Composition and Theory.  This is a one-year appointment, with the
possibility of renewal for a second year, beginning 8/98 as Assistant
Professor.  The incumbent of this position will have the opportunity
to apply for a possible, tenure eligible position in the Department of
Music.  The position entails undergraduate instruction in all levels
of music theory, analysis, orchestration/instrumentation, and
composition.  Additional professional interests might include but are
not limited to performance of contemporary music, music technology,
music for film, ethnomusicology, jazz, or improvisation.  Applicants
should demonstrate both success as a teacher and commitment to
teaching the general student in the liberal arts curriculum.  They
