ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC THEORY

Responsibilities: Teach core courses in music theory (including aural skills) at the freshman and sophomore level; undergraduate and graduate courses in analysis; and specialized upper-division and graduate courses which may include counterpoint, composition class, Schenkerian theory, 20th-century theory, or history of theory, and special topics in the candidate's area of expertise. Direct research for masters, Ph.D. and D.M.A. students. Serve on department, school and university committees and perform other service as appropriate to the position.
Appointment: Assistant Professor in a position leading to tenure. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Effective date is August 23, 2002.
Qualifications:
The Department of Music is fully accredited by NASM and has a current enrollment of approximately 180 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors, served by 22 full-time and 25 part-time faculty. Emphasis is placed on the areas of performance, music theory and history, and music education. Programs of study include the B.M., B.A., M.M., M.A., D.M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, and a Certificate in Performance. The Department is part of the School of Fine Arts, and is housed in renovated and newly constructed facilities completed in 1999.

Position/Rank: Assistant Professor, Music Theory
Job Description/Responsibilities: The Cornell University Department of Music seeks a music theorist. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, full-time, tenure-track. The appointment will be for a term of three years, with renewal dependent on satisfactory performance, and will commence July 1, 2002.
The successful candidate will have the doctorate (or equivalent professional accomplishment), outstanding scholarly potential with the promise of establishing an international reputation, and the ability to teach the theory and analysis of Western music at all undergraduate and graduate levels. We also welcome applications from theorists with demonstrated competence in digital/electronic music, music before 1600, vernacular music, or non-Western music.
The appointee will participate in a review of the Department's undergraduate theory program, planned for the academic year 2002-2003.

JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Ithaca College School of Music announces a full-time tenure-eligible position in music theory at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in fall 2002. An additional multiple-year, full-time, non-tenure-eligible position in music theory may also be available. Faculty Appointments
The School of Music at Queen's University at Kingston invites applications from outstanding scholars for a faculty appointment under the Queen's National Scholars Program. These appointments are to enrich teaching and research in newly developing fields of knowledge as well as traditional disciplines. The main criterion of interest to the selection committee is academic excellence regardless of other considerations. Preference will be given to scholars in the early- or mid-career stages. Another objective is to provide an opportunity to improve the proportion of women and members of designated minorities on faculty. Full-Time Position in Music Theory to begin Fall 2002
Mannes College of Music, a Division of New School University, seeks a musician of depth and accomplishment (a record of significant publications or comparable professional achievement) who is experienced in and dedicated to teaching music theory and related subjects primarily to intermediate and advanced undergraduates and master's students, and who wishes to participate in the long-range development of the Techniques of Music curriculum at Mannes. The successful candidate will be proficient in Schenkerian theory and experienced in teaching intensive courses to develop the abilities of students to do analyses on their own; will be willing to work within the established Mannes curriculum and participate in the evolution of that curriculum over time; and will have demonstrated leadership potential.
Additional areas of specialization and teaching ability (such as 20th-century music history and/or analysis, music history, composition, performance, or advanced aural skills and/or keyboard harmony and/or score reading) will enhance a candidate's application.
Qualifications: A doctoral degree in music theory, a record of teaching success, and a record of refereed publications or comparable achievement in composition or performance.

Faculty status: Mannes College of Music does not have formal faculty ranks and does not have tenured faculty positions. This is a full-time, salaried position with the possibility of indefinitely renewable, multi-year contracts.
The College Division (the conservatory division) of Mannes College of Music, located in Manhattan, has about 300 degree students majoring in performance, conducting, composition, and theory. Mannes offers undergraduate degrees (Bachelor of Music, Undergraduate Diploma, and Bachelor of Science), the master's degree (Master of Music), and the Professional Studies Certificate (an artist's diploma).
