Davidson College

Davidson College invites applications for a regular appointment 
in music history or music theory, with an initial two-year 
appointment at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 1, 
1997. Applicants should be able to teach undergraduate-level 
courses in American music (classical, jazz, folk, and rock 
idioms) as well as in their area of degree and specialization. 
The Ph.D. is required, and previous teaching experience is highly

MUSICOLOGIST, ETHNOMUSICOLOGIST, OR MUSIC THEORIST SPECIALIZING IN EUROPEAN
MUSIC TO 1600, OR IN AMERICAN VERNACULAR MUSIC OF THE 20TH CENTURY

The Cornell University Department of Music seeks a scholar with expertise
in European music before 1600, or in American vernacular musics of the 20th
century (which may include jazz).  The successful candidate will have a
broad knowledge of music and scholarship, a doctorate (or equivalent
professional accomplishment), an interest in teaching non-majors, music
majors and graduate students, and outstanding scholarly potential with
promise of establishing an international reputation.

The appointment, to commence in July 1997, is an entry-level position at
the rank of assistant professor.  The full-time, tenure-track position will
be for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal.

We seek someone who, in addition to having a specialist's knowledge in one
of the principal areas mentioned above, has wide-ranging musical and
intellectual interests.  Candidates will be favored who are prepared to
teach and supervise students interested in a broad spectrum of musical
styles and scholarly problems.  We will welcome professional-level musical
or scholarly skills beyond those implied by the candidate's principal
subject-area, especially those that may complement our present course
offerings.

Position Announcement

Music Theory

Teaching Responsibilities:  Teach undergraduate- and graduate-
level Music Theory courses for music majors.  Undergraduate
courses will include basic theory and ear training; upper-level
courses include twentieth-century techniques, counterpoint, form
and analysis.  Graduate courses in areas of specialty, to include
post-tonal music.  Essential duties include responsibilities in
thesis and doctoral document supervision.

Other Responsibilities:  Professional activity, including
research and publication, will be expected.  All faculty members
participate on various committees, as needed.

Qualifications:  Essential qualifications include a Ph.D. in
Music Theory, demonstrated abilities in teaching (including
necessary keyboard skills), and a demonstrated capacity for
scholarly achievement.  Expected qualifications include
experience with CAI; expertise in other technological
applications in music theory is desirable.

Date Available:  August 1997.  (Subject to funding approval.)

Rank and Salary:  The proposed rank is Assistant Professor.
Salary will be commensurate with training and experience.

Senior Scholar in Music Cognition

RANK AND SALARY
Associate Professor or Professor; nine-month tenured or tenure-
track appointment in the School of Music beginning Autumn Quarter,
1997. Salary dependent on qualifications and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
International reputation in the field of music cognition.  Excellence in
scholarly interdisciplinary inquiry; fluency in music theory and
psychological approaches to music cognition. Terminal degree in
music or an area related to music cognition preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This senior-level faculty position is funded jointly by the School of
Music, the Center for Cognitive Science, and the Office of Academic
Affairs.  The successful candidate is expected to engage in research
with scholars in music and psychology as well as other faculty
members affiliated with the Center for Cognitive Science, as the
opportunity arises.  The candidate will be expected to attract and
work with top-quality graduate and postdoctoral students and will
engage in teaching of music-cognition related courses at the
undergraduate and graduate levels.

FACULTY POSITION IN MUSIC THEORY BEGINNING AUTUMN 1997

The School of Music announces a position in its Theory/Composition
division scheduled to begin in September, 1997.

The School of Music at the University of Washington has approximately
450 majors in programs including Theory, Composition, Music Education,
Ethnomusicology, Music History, Conducting, Performance, and Jazz
Studies.

DESCRIPTION: Teach undergraduate courses in theory and musicianship,
including aural skills; supervise teaching assistants in core theory
sequence; teach courses at graduate level as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate in music theory.

RANK AND SALARY: Tenure track at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Salary is competitive and dependent upon experience and
