Melody. The new melody (played by the four solo celli) moves within a framing fourth, E-B, repeatedly filling the span with passing notes, as E-D-C♯-B. At the same time the melody from Block 1 (played by Flute 1) is transposed down five semitones from its previous location: it previously filled D-A as D-E-G-A; now it fills A-E as A-B-D-E.
