Collection. Along the circle of fifths, the original four-note segment G-D-A-E is extended one fifth clockwise with the addition of E-B. The transposition of the first melody fills in A-E. The new melody fills in E-B. Taking all of the notes present in the passage, we find a major or melodic minor scale on D, with the third degree omitted: D-E-(F/F)-G-A-B-C-D. Using the circle of fifths as a sort of template, we can hear how the piece expands as it goes along, gradually extending its reach.
