Rhythm and Meter. The melody is rhythmically simple—eight quarter notes—but resists any single meter internally. Its intrinsic sense of upbeats and downbeats would suit it better for ${}_4^2$ than for the ${}_4^3$ that is both notated by Stravinsky and asserted by the accompanying harmonic drone.
