Motive. There are two melodies in this passage (one at the top of the texture in the flutes and oboes, the other at the bottom of the texture in the cellos, basses, and bassoons), and both represent a perfect fourth filled in as (0235), as in Block 3. The perfect fourth, C-G, is filled in as C-B♭-A-G (0235), with an embedded C-B♭-G (035). The motivic material of the first four blocks is thus reasonably consistent, mostly involving (0235) with an embedded (035). Only the pitch location varies.
