Meaning and Expression. According to Sternfeld 1945, the Easter song presented in Block 4 “is published in Rimsky-Korsakov’s collection of one hundred Russian folk songs. It is called the Song of the Volochebniki (from the province of Smolensk) after the singing beggars who wander from village to village at Easter time, felicitating the householders and intoning again and again ‘For Jesus Christ is arisen.’” In Stravinsky’s setting, it is given a comically heavy, ponderous parallel accompaniment in thirds and octaves, in the bass register, and according to the ballet scenario, depicts “a small group of tipsy merrymakers.”
