Symmetry. The harmony D-E-G-A is symmetrical in two senses: 1) the central fifth, D-A, has two additional fifths, G-D and A-E, balanced below and above it; 2) the structural fifth, D-A, has two additional tones, E and G, balanced within it. The inversional symmetry of the harmony conveys a sense of immobility and stasis, despite the rhythmic activity.
