Motive. The neighbor-note motive, complete as D-E♭-D or incomplete as E♭-D, is heard repeatedly in the sixteenth-note figuration. This motive, which turns out to be primary throughout the Duet, is imitated in inversion in the oboe melody as G-F♯-G.
