Within the notated meter, ${}_4^3$, the characteristic rhythmic figure, sixteenth-dotted eighth, moves around in the measure, occupying all possible positions in no apparent pattern. In an implied ${}_4^2$, the rhythmic figures occupy the same position in each measure. In general, there is persistent ambiguity about the placement of distinctive rhythmic figures with respect to the underlying grid of upbeats and downbeats, which is itself ambiguous.
