Institution: University at Buffalo (SUNY) Position: Assistant Professor General Information: Tenure track, beginning Fall 2010 Qualifications: We are seeking a candidate whose scholarship shows exceptional originality and promise, and who demonstrates experience and fluency as a teacher. The Ph.D. should be in hand by 15 August 2010. Job Description/Responsibilities: Departmental duties will include the teaching of two classes per semester, at undergraduate and graduate levels, a load that will likely include one undergraduate core-curriculum theory course each semester; student advisement, including guiding master’s theses and Ph.D. dissertations in Music Theory; participation on master’s and doctoral committees in the various music graduate programs; and other committee obligations. The successful candidate will have demonstrated an ongoing commitment both to scholarship at the highest level, and to rigorous undergraduate instruction in harmony, aural skills, and analysis. No single area of specialization is targeted, though we seek candidates whose work will likely complement the perspectives and specialties of current faculty. The Department is especially interested in scholars working in one or more of the following areas: • New approaches to function and tonality—including diatonic set theory, transformation theory, and Neo-Riemannian theory • Mathematics and music • Critical and literary approaches to music theory • Music since 1980 • Popular musics • History of music theory Salary Range: Appropriate to background and experience; competitive with comparable U.S. universities Items to Send: CV and three letters of recommendation.
