Institution: Macalester College Position: Assistant or Associate Professor General Information: Full-time, tenure track beginning fall semester, 2011 Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a doctorate (Ph.D. or D.M.A.) in hand at the time of appointment, and will show evidence both of excellence in the teaching of undergraduate music theory and aural skills and of professional activity and future potential in their specialized field. Candidates from the musical subdisciplines of music theory, musicology, and performance are invited to apply, so long as they can demonstrate a commitment to and abiding interest in teaching music theory and aural skills. Job Description/Responsibilities: The Macalester College Music Department seeks a dedicated and innovative teacher of Music Theory and Aural Skills. Though the position is intended primarily to serve the music theory curriculum, preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate an interest in contributing to the broader intellectual and artistic life of a liberal arts college. Teaching opportunities in other areas, dependent upon the candidate’s skills and interests, might include such interdisciplinary programs as Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; American Studies; or International Studies; or teaching in the College’s first-year seminar program. Above all, the faculty member we seek will have the ability to inspire students, to foster artistic and academic excellence, and to work collaboratively within a department consisting of six tenure-track faculty, several other full- and part-time faculty, and approximately forty studio instructors. Standard courses in music history, world music, theory, and composition are complemented by such electives as orchestration, Chinese music, ethnomusicology, seminars in composer and genres, history of jazz, and American popular music. Ensembles include the Symphony Orchestra, African Music Ensembles, MacJazz, Concert Choirs, men’s and women’s choirs, and Pipe Band. Lessons are offered on all standard orchestral instruments as well as many others, including mandolin, sitar, bagpipes, and African percussion.
