Institution: University of Calgary Position: Assistant or Associate Professor General Information: The Department of Music of the University of Calgary Faculty of Fine Arts has an opening for a tenure-track professor at the Assistant or Associate rank to begin July 1, 2006. The Department seeks an artist/scholar in musicology or music theory, with expertise in contemporary concert music. Particular consideration will be given to applicants who can lead program development in new music performance, and who posses a specialization in one or more of the following areas: conducting, composition, Canadian music, popular music studies, ethnomusicology, or jazz. Qualifications: Candidates must have completed the PhD (or equivalent) and have an established research/performance/creation profile. Job Description/Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in core music literature and theory areas, with particular emphasis on recent concert music; supervise undergraduate, masters and doctoral projects and theses; demonstrate leadership in departmental, faculty and university governance; participate in interdisciplinary teaching and program development. Other Information: The Department of Music has a student body of approximately 175 students, of which 30 are Masters and Doctoral students. It has 17 full-time faculty, as well as part-time faculty in the areas of performance, theory, and music history. The Department offers undergraduate programs in Music History and Theory, Composition, Performance, and Music Education. It also offers graduate degrees in Musicology/Theory, Composition, Performance, and Music Education. The University has a large music library of scores, books, and recordings, including a special collection in Romantic and 20th-century Austrian Music. A branch of the Canadian Music Centre is housed in the University Library, affording easy access to a special collection of scores, recordings, and archival material of prominent Canadian composers. The Department showcase is the Eckhardt-Gramatté Recital Hall in Calgary's beloved Rozsa Centre, which houses a state-of-the-art recording studio The department is home to both an electroacoustic music studio, and a collection of early instruments and world-music instruments.
