Assistant Professor, full-time, tenure track. Appointment Date: September 2006

Qualifications:

Appropriate terminal degree is required. Successful record of teaching experience of aural skills and music theory at the university level is preferred. The Department of Music seeks a strong individual, with a genuine interest in teaching musicianship and fundamentals of music theory to beginning-level students across all programs.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Primary teaching duties will be to provide strong instruction for traditional freshman and sophomore level aural skills and music theory courses. Ability to contribute significantly to the Department of Music in an additional area (such as performance applied, ensembles, music history/musicology, music education, music business, sound recording technology, etc.) is desired. Perform normal faculty duties in student advising, University and Department service, research, publication and professional activities.

Salary Range: Salary competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

Other Information:

The Department of Music at the University of Massachusetts Lowell offers four undergraduate majors (sound recording technology, music studies/education, performance and music business) and graduate degrees in performance, music education and sound recording technology. The Department has 14 full-time faculty and 48 adjunct faculty. Its typical enrollment is approximately 325 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. Durgin Hall, home to the Department, contains a 1200-seat concert hall, a 400-seat Recital Hall, six sound recording technology studios of various types, a Music Technology Laboratory (containing 21 Apple G5 computer workstations with MIDI keyboards), two ensemble rehearsal rooms, 30 practice rooms, and numerous classroom spaces.

The Department's largest program is sound recording technology; it is one of the University's six 'Signature Programs' and a program that has become nationally recognized for the quality of its graduates and faculty. The University was the first public institution in the United States to offer a music education degree, and continues to be a regional leader in the discipline; music education/music teaching is the department's second largest program.

The Music Business program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has been in existence since the early 1980s, and is offered by the Department of Music and is a Bachelor of Music degree program. Student enrollment in the program is approximately 70 majors.
