Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Department of Music within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta is seeking applications for the position of Department Chair. The Department of Music has an established international reputation for excellence with its vibrant programs in the study, performance, and composition of music. Its overarching goal is to contribute to musical creation and scholarship and prepare students to thrive in a multicultural and rapidly developing musical world in a way that contributes vitally to the community, and to our standing as one of the world’s leading universities (www.music.ualberta.ca).

With 21 full-time faculty members and approximately 50 contract instructors, the Department supports multiple degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including performance degrees (BMus, BMus/BEd, MMus, DMus) and academic degrees (BA major and minor, BA Honours, MA, and PhD). Enrollments total approximately 300 undergraduate majors and minors, and approximately 60 graduate students, as well as a large number of course enrollments from students majoring in other subjects. We are developing a fundraising campaign to support Music and its spaces, with the possibility of renovation of our century-old concert hall and a search for new space and new opportunities.

The next Chair will be an internationally recognized artist or scholar with a PhD or appropriate terminal degree, a superior teaching record and a substantial publication record suitable for appointment to the rank of tenured full professor. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated administrative experience. Any area of expertise that complements the Department’s research profile will be considered. The Chair must appreciate and encourage the diversity of scholarship and artistic activities in the department, and be capable of implementing a supportive, collegial and open administrative style. She or he will articulate a broad vision of creative, research, and teaching activities, and will possess a clear operational sense that both supports and promotes all areas of the department through careful management and strategic planning. The Chair will work to promote and strengthen community links and will be expected to take an important role in fundraising. Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with experience and rank.

The University of Alberta, one of Canada’s largest and most accomplished research universities, is situated in Edmonton, a metropolitan area of over one million with a vibrant artistic community and excellent standard of living. Established in 1908 as a board-governed public institution, the University of Alberta has earned the reputation of being one of the best universities in Canada based on its strengths in teaching, research and service. The University of Alberta serves over 38,000 students in more than 200 undergraduate and 170 graduate programs (www.ualberta.ca). The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and most diverse faculty on campus, and one of the largest research and teaching centres in western Canada (www.arts.ualberta.ca).
