Institution: University of Massachusetts, Amherst Position: Teaching Assistant General Information: The University of Massachusetts, Amherst anticipates the availability of one Teaching Assistantship with responsibilities in technology and theory beginning fall 2006. Students awarded teaching assistantships receive at least $6,156 plus a full waiver of tuition and waiver of most fees. Qualifications: Experience with Macintosh computers running OS X is desirable. Assistantships are awarded only to students accepted into and matriculating in the MM or Ph.D. programs. Job Description/Responsibilities: This position carries responsibilities assisting in operating and maintaining the University's Music Technology Lab, with additional duties assisting in the instruction of Music Theory or Aural Skills classes, for a total of 10 hours per week during the regular academic year. We have recently expanded our academic faculty to include five scholars who devote all their teaching and research to the field of music theory. Beginning this academic year, we inaugurate a broad series of new course offerings in music theory at the graduate level. In addition to our existing courses in Schenkerian Analysis, Post-Tonal Theory, History of Theory, and Pedagogy of Theory, we will now offer the following courses on a regular basis: Musical Forms, Analysis of Counterpoint, Motivic Analysis, Graduate Musicianship, Analysis of Opera, Analysis of Music Since 1945, Analysis of Rhythm and Meter, Analysis for Performance, and Jazz Styles and Analysis.
