Institution: Birmingham-Southern College Position: Assistant Professor of Music (Theory and Piano) General Information: This is a tenure-track position commencing August 2013. Qualifications: The candidate must have earned the doctorate (or be ABD) by the commencement of employment in August 2013 in either music theory or piano, and must demonstrate experience in teaching in these areas at the college level. Ideally, a candidate with a strong background and graduate degree in piano performance, with a DMA or Ph.D. in music theory is desired. The successful candidate for this position will be one who especially demonstrates a gift and enthusiasm for teaching at the undergraduate level in a department whose mission encompasses the ideals of the undergraduate liberal-arts education and a strong commitment to educating undergraduate musicians. Job Description/Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate courses in theory (harmony), teach and/or supervise the courses in aural skills, and upper level theory courses offered on a semi-annual rotation: 18th-century Counterpoint, Orchestration, and Music Since 1945. Teach approximately one-third load of applied piano (private lessons) to majors and non-majors each term (approximately six contact hours per week total); coordinate activities related to piano within the department as applicable (coordinating master classes, etc.). Teach additional piano-related courses (e.g. Accompanying) as needed and depending on load considerations. Serve on faculty committees by appointment, or as elected, and participate as academic advisors to students. Scholarship appropriate to the discipline is expected, and may include publications, presentations at scholarly meetings, professional performance, faculty recitals, etc. at the national and/or international level.
