Institution: California Institute of the Arts Position: Creative Theorist / Musical Scholar General Information: (Part-time or full-time position) Application deadline is March 31, 2006 for earliest start date, September 1, 2006. This is a new position that will remain open until the most appropriate candidate is determined. Qualifications: Minimum qualifications: significant professional record of publications and lectures, completed advanced degrees or equivalent professional experience in relevant musical fields, such as theory, history, musicology, ethnomusicology or related fields and significant college level teaching experience. Job Description/Responsibilities: The California Institute of the Arts, School of Music seeks a creative musical scholar of national repute to develop and teach undergraduate core-curriculum courses, such as music theory and musicianship skills, history, literature, analysis, and related areas, and with the ability to also supervise graduate, research seminars and projects, contributing to possible new, advanced degree programs. Areas of research expertise, like those represented in the school, may be quite diverse, such as avant-garde or experimental music, world music cultures, improvisation (including jazz), interactive musical technology, speculative theory, or specialized areas in Western music. The person selected will be expected to help develop the School's core curriculum for undergraduates with keen sensibility to what is needed for young musicians to succeed in the rapidly evolving professional environment requiring broad, flexible skills and understanding the heterogeneous nature of styles and cultures. Leadership and consensus building skills applicable to curriculum development are essential. Experience as a performer and/or composer would be helpful. CalArts is especially interested in candidates who have developed innovative methods of research and/or analysis and original areas of study.
