Institution: Kalamazoo College Position: Assistant Professor General Information: The Department of Music at Kalamazoo College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, to begin in the fall of 2014. Kalamazoo College is a highly selective, nationally known liberal arts college offering an undergraduate experience that weaves a traditional liberal arts curriculum with educational experiences in both domestic and international settings. The Department of Music, among the most enrolled on campus, has four full-time faculty and an extended roster of adjunct teaching artists. For our students — whether casual musicians or working to earn a BA music major — we seek to integrate both academic and applied approaches to music study. Among our major ensembles are a symphony orchestra, two bands, three choruses, and an international percussion ensemble with component African, Indian and Japanese groups. The campus is located midway between Chicago and Detroit in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a metropolitan community of 225,000 that supports four college and university campuses as well as numerous civic, arts, and cultural associations (such as the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Fontana Chamber Arts, and the Gilmore Keyboard Festival). Thirty-five miles from Lake Michigan, the area also offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. Qualifications: We seek an Ethnomusicologist — any field of scholarly focus is welcome — who also has significant expertise in Western tonal and post-tonal theory; a Ph. D, or evidence of imminent completion thereof, is required. Job Description/Responsibilities: Applicants are encouraged to discuss how their scholarship and teaching might resonate with an increasingly diverse student body and with interdisciplinary or experiential education programs at the College. Kalamazoo College faculty teach six courses per year, divided in pairs among three 10-week quarters. The successful candidate would be expected to teach a lower-division Ethnomusicology survey course, as well as at least two lower-division music theory classes. Of the remaining three courses, two could be upper-division offerings in areas of the applicant's interest, and one should contribute to the "Shared Passages" core curriculum (first-year and sophomore seminars and senior capstones). In addition to a clear commitment to undergraduate teaching, an active scholarly agenda and substantive contributions to faculty governance will also be expected of the successful candidate. While not required, applicants who are also performing musicians are welcome. Salary Range: Salary is competitive and consistent with level of experience. Items to Send: Applications received by November 1st, 2013 will receive full consideration, with later applications considered as necessary until the position is filled. Selected applicants will be invited to meet with representatives from the search committee at this year's SEM conference in Indianapolis. To apply, please visit https://www.kzoo.edu/music/search/ and upload the following: a cover letter that describes your scholarly interests and your teaching philosophy, and that explains how both of these might resonate with an increasingly diverse student body and with interdisciplinary or experiential education programs at the College; a curriculum vitae; undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial acceptable) in PDF format. Separately, please have three confidential letters of recommendation sent to musicSearch@kzoo.edu with the subject line lastname_firstname. Kalamazoo College is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and encourages candidates who will contribute to the cultural diversity of the College to apply and to identify themselves if they wish.
