Job Description/Responsibilities: Mannes, the century-old music conservatory at The New School, announces a search to fill the Edward Aldwell Professorship in The Techniques of Music (an endowed professorship). Mannes is dedicated to advancing the creative role of music in all aspects of a rapidly changing society. Mannes seeks to develop “citizen artists” who engage the world around them, in and through music, in traditional, emergent and new forms of practice. The Techniques of Music curriculum has a long and storied history at Mannes. Created by the theorist and musicologist Felix Salzer, a prominent student of Heinrich Schenker, it was further developed and led over many years by Salzer’s student and eventual colleague Carl Schachter. Professor Schachter continues to be active on the Mannes faculty. The current department chair is Professor Robert Cuckson. The successful candidate will be an educator and artist of depth and accomplishment who is experienced in teaching Schenkerian music theory and analysis at the college level, and who will participate in implementation and long-range development of the Techniques of Music curriculum at Mannes. The Edward Aldwell Professor will be willing to work within the established Mannes curriculum and participate as a leader in the development of that curriculum over time. The successful candidate will be someone who understands and respects the tradition while being committed to an evolving practice that interrogates the status quo. It is expected that the Edward Aldwell Professor will participate significantly in ongoing discussions and decisions about the evolving role of music theory in the overall Mannes curriculum, and will seek ways to connect this area to related areas of practice across the other six divisions of The New School. Additional areas of specialization and teaching experience that will enhance a candidate’s application include advanced skills, music of the 20th and 21st centuries, composition, and performance. The New School is committed to maintaining a diverse educational and creative community, a policy of equal opportunity in all its activities and programs, including employment. The University is engaged in a diversity initiative and we encourage individuals from groups underrepresented in U.S. higher education to apply. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran or marital status. Faculty member may be expected to teach undergraduate as well as graduate courses. The final decision to hire is subject to Provost budgetary approval.
