Position: Assistant Professor

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Music Theory

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching written music theory at the undergraduate level to music majors and non-majors

• Demonstrated interest/experience in teaching in a liberal arts environment

• Strong keyboard skills/aural skills

• Knowledge of technology that supports theory instruction, including ear training software

• Administrative experience and/or experience coordinating a theory program and developing a music theory curriculum preferred

• Experience in teaching composition desired

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Teaching duties include the following areas (12 credits per semester):

- First year & Sophomore level written music theory classes

- Upper level topics courses in music theory as needed (Form & Analysis, Counterpoint, Orchestration)

- Undergraduate liberal studies courses in music

- Rock music theory course

- Supervision of individual student research projects in theory & analysis as needed

- Supervision and instruction of composition students

• Collaboration with departmental team regarding curriculum development and evaluation in the academic music area (music theory, aural skills, and music history)

• Service as an academic adviser for department undergraduate students

• Administration of diagnostic exams for incoming students as needed

• Coordination of contingent faculty involved in theory and aural skills instruction

• Other duties, as assigned, according to the candidate’s qualifications and departmental needs

• Ability to engage in departmental and college-wide collaborations to enhance the intellectual and artistic climate of the college

• Commitment to the holistic development of the student

• Dedication to the value of a liberal arts core curriculum
