We seek to hire an assistant professor with demonstrable experience, versatility, and fluency. No single area of scholarly specialization is targeted; we seek candidates whose interests and work will complement the perspectives and specialties of current faculty. The Ph.D. in Music Theory (or its equivalent) should be in hand by 15 August 2014. Among the duties of the successful candidate will be the following: Be an inspiring teacher and role model within the Ph.D. program in Music Theory, lead music theory seminars in appropriate subjects, advise doctoral dissertations & master's theses, and mentor music theory graduate students at all levels. Teach graduate seminars in music theory designed for to graduate students in composition, historical musicology, and performance, especially seminars on 20th-century analysis and composer studies. Act as the music theory faculty member on doctoral committees for students in composition and historical musicology. Offer upper-division courses (in analysis, counterpoint, and repertoire) to undergraduate Music majors. Participate in UB's undergraduate music theory core-curriculum sequence. Contribute meaningfully to the general musicianship of all Music undergraduate and graduate students. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees, as appropriate. The normal teaching load within the Music Department is two full courses each semester plus advising and committee work. Substantial research production (i.e. publications, presentations, and the like) is expected of all faculty. The University at Buffalo Music Department is a unique and highly specialized program, home to the Center for 21st Century Music, June in Buffalo, and the Slee Sinfonietta among its many distinguished offerings, supported by a core group of world-class scholars and performers specializing in recent music of all flavors. The Music Theory program, an integral part of this remarkable musical enterprise, has an equally distinguished pedigree. It is one of the few theory programs with two SMT Publication Award winners on its past and present faculty. UB's graduates receive a thorough training in the standard disciplines, but are also encouraged to explore the unconventional and unorthodox; UB alumnae have taught at Yale, Swarthmore, Temple, Ithaca, Ohio State, Wesleyan, Wilfrid Laurier, and Ottawa. The recently established Slee Institute for Tonal Harmony focuses on the porous boundary between tonal and post-tonal music, and explores ways of incorporating recent theoretical insights into the undergraduate core curriculum.
