Institution: CUNY Queensborough Community College

Position: Assistant Professor of Music

Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in music or music education from a regionally accredited institution is required. Strong preference for candidates with a specialization in percussion (including performance-level percussion proficiency). A specialization in other areas (e.g., jazz or world music/ethnomusicology, including performance-level proficiency in another instrument or voice) with the ability to teach percussion will also be considered.

Preferred qualifications include: 1) college level teaching experience in music (including experience leading ensembles) with a strong preference for community college teaching experience; 2) scholarship and research interests in music; 3) research interests in teaching/learning innovation; 4) experience using instructional technology and knowledge of music technology; 5) experience with student-centered and high-impact pedagogy (see http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/academies/high-impact-practices.html); 6) experience with course and/or program assessment; and 7) experience teaching diverse college student populations.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

As a community college in the CUNY system, our students primarily take general education and lower division courses for university transfer. Contractual teaching load is 27 contact hours for the academic year (typically 8-10 course sections); summer optional. Faculty on Assistant Professor tenure track receive reassigned time to pursue scholarship. Teaches courses in class percussion and percussion ensemble; other teaching assignments may include musicianship (including beginning piano), music theory, music education, music history, literature, and appreciation (including world music/ethnomusicology and possibly jazz). Participates in departmental and college activities including committees, course and program assessment, curriculum development, and preparation of grants. Provides academic support and advisement for students. For faculty in Assistant Professor rank, continued scholarly activities are required for tenure and promotion. Some evening or weekend teaching may be required. Position to start in Fall 2014.

Salary Range: $42,873 - $74,133 / $81,645 with generous benefits package. Initial appointment, commensurate with qualifications and experience, usually near the mid-point.
