Institution: University of Washington Position: Assistant Professor General Information: Tenure track, beginning September 2015 Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be conversant with the many styles and genres of American music—including concert music, avant-garde and “experimental” music, jazz, blues, musical theater, opera, film music, popular music, folk and community music, country music and rock—in both their historical and their contemporary manifestations, and will be able to demonstrate scholarly expertise and achievement in at least one of these areas. Applicants must have a conferred terminal doctoral degree or foreign equivalent prior to the start of the appointment. Job Description/Responsibilities: Assistant Professor—American Music Studies The School of Music at the University of Washington is seeking a versatile, boundary-crossing scholar/musician with a broad specialization in American music for a full-time (100%, 9-month) tenure-track position, to begin in September 2015. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor. The individual selected will have the unique opportunity to play a critical role in developing and launching new degree programs in American Music Studies. The School of Music is recognized for its present strengths in jazz, contemporary composition, and traditional academic areas of American music studies, and it is anticipated that the new American Music Studies programs will enhance and expand these strengths in many significant and innovative directions. University of Washington faculty members engage in teaching, research and service. This position will offer opportunities for close scholarly and curricular collaboration with colleagues across the School of Music and beyond. Teaching will include American music courses on both undergraduate and graduate levels, for both majors and non-majors, and will present opportunities to introduce courses designed by the candidate. Other duties will include the advising of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing American Music Studies, and service on graduate degree and other departmental committees.
