Institution: University of San Francisco Position: Tenure Track Assistant Professor, Music Theory/Composition Job Description/Responsibilities: Tenure Track Assistant Professor, Music Theory/Composition University of San Francisco Job Summary: The Music Program of the Performing Arts Department at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Music Theory/Composition at the Assistant Professor level, to begin Fall 2016. We seek someone who is both a music theorist and a composer or performer, who has is also committed to using music to promote social justice and community involvement. The successful candidate will be interested in joining a dynamic, committed, interdisciplinary and innovative faculty and in furthering the Performing Arts and Social Justice Major. Job Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate theory and composition courses for non-majors and majors, as well as developing and teaching courses for performing arts majors concerning the intersection between music, community building, and social justice, producing the music concerts. Other responsibilities include producing the music program concerts, mentoring and advising students, participating in the ongoing curriculum development, scheduling courses, and coordinating meetings and projects with the music adjunct faculty. Some of these responsibilities (like advising, curriculum development, etc.) are shared with the other full time faculty member. The typical full-time, tenure-track or tenured, teaching load is two 4-unit courses per semester, with an additional 4 units every fourth semester (2-2-2-3), or the equivalent in 2-unit classes or conducting duties. As music program coordinator, the faculty may be granted course release units to compensate for the additional program service. Minimum Requirements: Qualifications Applicants must hold a terminal degree in their field (typically Ph.D. or D.M.A.) earned by the start of appointment. The successful candidate’s qualifications include: significant experience of University teaching music theory at the undergraduate level; evidence of working professionally in community-based social justice projects outside the academy; a corpus of scholastic, theoretical, or compositional work; willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment; and an understanding of and commitment to support the missions of the Department and the University. Experience and interest in performing and/or conducting a music ensemble a plus.
