Institution: Michigan State University Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory (Tenure-Stream) General Information: Assistant Professor of Music Theory (Tenure-Stream), effective August 16, 2016 Qualifications: -A completed Ph.D. in music theory at the time of appointment is required. -A strong commitment to music theory pedagogy and successful university-level teaching experience are required. -Scholarly promise is required, and a record of scholarly publication and ongoing research is desirable. -The ability to teach theory and analysis of 20th- and 21st-century music at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is required. -A research focus on theories of 20th- and/or 21st-century music is desirable. -The ability to teach effectively at multiple levels, including in the undergraduate core, in junior- and senior-level electives, in courses for graduate performers, conductors, and composers, and in specialized seminars for master’s students in music theory, is desirable. -A commitment to collaborating with colleagues in other disciplines within the College of Music and across the university is desirable. Job Description/Responsibilities: -Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory that serve the needs of music majors in a variety of sub-disciplines. -Develop a national reputation through an active agenda of research and publication in the field of music theory. -Participate in activities related to the academic mission of the university, including academic governance, outreach and engagement, music entrepreneurship, service on graduate committees, and administration of area exams. -Seek and receive external grants to support research, teaching, and/or creative activities.
