Institution: Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand)

Position: Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor)

General Information:

Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington seeks a Lecturer in Music Theory, equivalent to a tenured Assistant Professor position. As with most academic appointments in New Zealand, this is a permanent position — i.e. with no tenure review process. If possible, there is the opportunity for the successful candidate to begin teaching in the July semester 2016, although we are realistic that candidates will most likely not be able to begin until our March semester in 2017.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have completed, or nearly completed, a doctorate in a music theory topic, and should have a track record of research publications in the area of music theory, or show strong potential to develop such a portfolio. Experience in undergraduate theory/musicianship curriculum development, as well as a demonstrable commitment to interdisciplinarity and research-led teaching, would be an advantage.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

We require applicants with research and teaching expertise in the areas of music theory, musicianship and analysis. While the key teaching focus will be the core undergraduate theory sequence, additional expertise in post-tonal theory, film music studies, and/or jazz and popular music would be an advantage. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to upper-level theory classes and the supervision of postgraduate theses. This is a research-active position, which means that the appointee will be expected to be active in their area(s) of research expertise. The school's research quality is assessed every six years through New Zealand's Performance-Based Research Funding (PBRF) process.
