Institution: Marshall University Position: Chair of the Department of Music General Information: Chair, Department of Music; 12-month, tenure-track appointment; rank (associate or full professor) and salary negotiable. Appointment begins July 1, 2007. The chair reports to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. Qualifications: University administrative experience and terminal degree required. Demonstrated excellence in leadership, teaching, creative activity and/or scholarship; clear artistic vision, successful resource seeking and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with university administration, faculty, staff, students, and community members. Job Description/Responsibilities: Lead a dynamic academic department in its continued growth, increased national visibility and recruitment efforts while building upon past successes. Maintain channels of communication with the university administration. Oversight of concert and recital schedule; teach a range of students from undergraduate non-majors to graduate students in classes and/or applied studio. Other Information: One of the most vibrant and respected departments on campus, the Department of Music of the College of Fine Arts, is a fully accredited member of NASM that has undergone significant growth in size and visibility, with increased administrative support. Twenty-one full-time, 11 part-time faculty, and 5 full-time staff serve approximately 150 undergraduate majors in composition, education, jazz studies, performance, and theory. Approximately 30 graduate students are enrolled in MA programs in education, history/literature, performance, and theory/composition. The performance calendar is supported by 2 concert bands, 3 concert choirs, 2 jazz bands, opera theatre, and orchestra along with numerous chamber groups and solo recitals. The 300-member Marching Department: Thunder and MU Pep Band support Division I-A athletics. Department facilities are located in Smith Music Hall including a newly renovated, 450-seat recital hall, and Jomie Jazz Center with its 24-track digital recording studio and Jazz Forum. The Preparatory Division offers the community diverse programs in vocal and instrumental music. Campus & Community Marshall University, founded in 1837, is West Virginia¹s oldest and one of America¹s most progressive state universities. The university enrolls over 15,000 students in associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs. Since the mid-90s, the university has dedicated the Drinko Library, the Jomie Jazz Center, a $31 million medical center, dormitory/dining hall complex, a new parking facility and most recently, a biotechnology sciences building.
