Institution: St. Olaf College Position: Music Term Faculty (2 temporary positions) General Information: Two 1-year positions are open: one full-time (1.0 FTE) and one part-time (0.84 FTE) Qualifications: A doctorate in music theory preferred, although ABD will be considered. The successful candidate will be a pedagogue and scholar of outstanding ability who will contribute proactively to the artistic and intellectual life of St. Olaf College. In particular, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to pedagogy and to situating music within a liberal arts education. The candidate will show a commitment to the mission of both the department and the college. Keyboard skills sufficient to support instruction are desirable. Job Description/Responsibilities: The Department of Music at St. Olaf College invites applications for a one-year, full-time position, and also a one-year, part-time position. The primary responsibility will be to teach written theory and aural skills to music majors in both professional and liberal arts degree programs. In addition to classroom instruction, responsibilities will include serving on department committees. Both positions begin September 1, 2017, with rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Both positions are one-year appointments with potential for subsequent appointments. The department offers both the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Arts degrees, with programs in performance, music education, church music, theory-composition, history-literature, and elective studies and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The music department includes 29 full-time and 33 part-time faculty members. Approximately 275 students are enrolled as music majors, and approximately 1000 of the college’s students are regularly involved in music through ensembles, lessons and course work. The nationally recognized St. Olaf Orchestra, St. Olaf Band and St. Olaf Choir all undertake major domestic tours each year as well as frequent international tours. Jazz I was recently named the top undergraduate jazz ensemble by Downbeat Magazine. Other ensembles include the Philharmonia, Norseman Band, Collegium Musicum and Chamber Singers, two jazz ensembles in addition to Jazz I, three handbell choirs and five other faculty-led choirs.. The thriving Lyric Theater program produces three shows annually. Archived performances for all of these groups can be viewed online.
