Institution: Berklee College of Music Position: 9-month part-time faculty position General Information: Berklee College of Music invites applications for a part-time faculty position in the Ear Training Department. The ideal candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching and enjoy working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding. This is a 9-month part-time faculty position, initial appointment to begin September 1st, 2017. Compensation is commensurate with professional experience. The Ear Training Department includes 10 full-time and 34 part-time faculty members who teach a four-semester sequence of required core ear training courses, as well as electives in transcription and performance, harmonic, rhythmic, world music, advanced, and atonal ear training. As many as 2400 students are enrolled in Berklee ear training courses each fall and spring semester. Berklee’s core ear training curriculum emphasizes the practical application of ear skills to instrumental and vocal performance, including improvisation, using moveable-do solfege, conducting, dictation (melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic), sight-singing, rhythm and movement skills, and recognition exercises. Students use computer technology to practice dictation and transcription using web resources, record themselves for homework, notate music, and communicate with faculty. Ear training courses make and reinforce connections with material taught in Ensemble, Harmony, Contemporary Writing and Production, and Music Technology courses. Diverse musical examples from a wide range of musical cultures and historical periods are used in classes. Class populations are limited to about 18 students and class meetings are highly interactive and participatory. Qualifications: > Bachelorʼs degree required. > Masterʼs degree in music strongly preferred; equivalent professional experience considered. > Extensive experience and current activity as a professional musician required. > Professional experience in varied styles of music strongly preferred. > Music teaching experience required. > College music teaching experience strongly preferred. > Applicant must demonstrate and supply evidence of excellent skills in ear training, transcription, music reading and notation, music theory and analysis, and classroom teaching. > Keyboard skills for classroom demonstration and performance of melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, and contrapuntal dictation examples required. Fluency in interpreting and accompanying from jazz and popular music chord symbols at the piano is required. > Music and general computer technology skills for music notation, basic music recording, word processing and document preparation, and use of web course management software are required. > A willingness and ability to adhere to a structured departmental curriculum are required. Prior knowledge of movable-do solfege with do-based minor is not required, but a willingness to quickly learn and use it in the classroom are required. > Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are required. > Commitment to continuing growth as a teacher, musician, and colleague are required. > Preference may be given to candidates who are also qualified to teach in other areas, depending on the collegeʼs needs.
