Institution: Belmont University Position: Director of the School of Music General Information: Beginning June 1, 2018, Full-Time, Tenure-Track Qualifications: Knowledge: • Knowledge of the diverse musical and professional needs of 21st century musician informed by significant performance, teaching and professional experience. • Knowledge of NASM accreditation expectations and standards with significant practical experience implementing those standards. It is preferred that candidates will also have some experience with institutional teacher certification accreditation processes (CAEP). • General and broad knowledge of music curricula as demonstrated by noteworthy teaching experience in higher education. Skills and Abilities: • Ability to work in a collaborative leadership model with the Associate and Assistant Director, and other college leaders. • Ability to provide innovative leadership to artist-faculty and sustain focus on vision. • Ability to supervise staff and manage projects/tasks. • Ability to guide and manage program development in collaboration with the college and, as needed, across campus. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. • Ability to interact effectively with multiple and diverse constituencies (from students and faculty to parents, community arts and education leaders). • Effective managerial skills characterized by fairness, adaptability, and willingness to innovate. • Ability to foster effective professional development of faculty. • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Experience: • Record of excellence in teaching and artistic or scholarly activity. • Evidence of successful academic leadership experience at the level of chair or above. • Three or more years of administrative educational experience is preferred. Education: • Earned doctoral degree in music from an accredited institution. Job Description/Responsibilities: Belmont University and the College of Visual and Performing Arts are seeking applications for a new Director of the School of Music position to begin June 1, 2018. Belmont University is a thriving, nationally ranked, private liberal arts University located in Nashville, Tennessee. The School of Music is a large, comprehensive music unit with diverse undergraduate and graduate programs and a long tradition of excellence. The Director will serve as a member of the College of Visual and Performing Arts Leadership Team and report to the Dean of the College. The School of Music is accredited by NASM and exists in a creative community that includes Visual Art, Theatre and Dance. The School of Music Director will serve as a collaborative leader in a positive, collegial environment with the Associate Director and Assistant Director for the School of Music. The Director will manage and guide the daily operations of the music unit while providing artistic and academic leadership that demonstrate a strong commitment to the vision, values, purpose and strategic priorities of the College and the University. This 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment will teach in the college and be granted time for administrative responsibilities. Teaching responsibilities will be based on expertise and need. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in Music. Job Functions: • Lead and manage academic processes and planning in conjunction with other music unit leaders. • Sustain and create new curriculum that aligns with college objectives and serves the liberal arts educational framework (BELL Core) of the university. • Coordinate all assessment processes in the School of Music and lead the development of meaningful, consistent assessment. • Manage undergraduate and graduate enrollment activities in partnership with the School of Music Associate and Assistant Directors and the University Admissions office. • Manage operational budgets and annual budget planning. • Serve as the music executive. Plan, manage and complete all NASM accreditation activities for the School of Music. • Provide support and solutions for student academic related issues within the School of Music. • Complete annual evaluations for Full-time and Adjunct Faculty (Lecturers and Part-Time Faculty) within the school. • Cultivate and sustain positive relationships with area coordinators in the music unit, the college leadership team, Registrar, and other academic leaders across campus. • Work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, and students to advance the goals of the School of Music within the strategic direction of the college and the mission and vision of the university. • Teach three courses annually in a School of Music related discipline or signature BELL Core courses. • The above statements describe the job’s essential responsibilities and requirements.
