Institution: Cornell University Position: Postdoctoral Associate in Computational Music Theory Pedagogy General Information: The full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month position, which is supported by the Active Learning Initiative in Cornell’s College of Arts & Sciences (http://as.cornell.edu/active-learning-initiative), will run for a period of two years, starting on July 1, 2018. Qualifications: A PhD, DMA, or equivalent doctoral degree is required and must have been awarded by the time the appointment begins. We are particularly interested in candidates whose primary research involves music theory pedagogy, who are passionate about improving student learning and exploring new ways of teaching, and who have a strong background in computer science. Fluency in Python and JavaScript is highly desirable, as are strong musicianship skills, proficiency at the keyboard, and familiarity with a wide range of musical idioms and current music-theoretical methods such as schema theory and neo-Riemannian theory. Job Description/Responsibilities: The Department of Music at Cornell University invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Associate in Computational Music Theory Pedagogy. Focusing on introductory undergraduate theory and musicianship classes, the Associate will work closely with Cornell faculty to develop software that will enable portable MIDI keyboards to be networked in the classroom and thus to operate as polyphonic clickers that provide real-time musical and informational feedback to students, peers, and instructors. We expect this software to be open-source, and its development might involve the adaptation of existing open-source software. It is expected that the design, development, and implementation processes will directly inform the Associate’s research agenda, resulting in paper presentations, publications, further teaching opportunities, and other forms of professional advancement. Drawing on this hardware and software, and with input and feedback from relevant Cornell faculty, the Associate will be principally responsible for the design of Introduction to Western Music Theory and will teach the course twice, in Spring 2019 and Spring 2020. The Associate will also teach an undergraduate theory course in Fall 2019, and will thus be responsible for a total of three courses over the two-year appointment. Additionally, the Associate will integrate components devised for Introduction to Western Music Theory into the design and implementation of other courses, including Introduction to Western Musical Notation, which the Associate will help transform into a self-paced online course. Supervision and support will be provided by two faculty mentors appointed to oversee the Associate’s professional development. As part of the Active Learning Initiative, the position is also supported by Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation, which will provide comprehensive guidance and resources on course design, assessment, and related issues. The Associate will liaise with counterparts in other departments by attending weekly discussion meetings. S/he will also attend relevant classes in the Department of Music and across the College in order to gain insights into forms of active learning that are currently being deployed and the bearing they might have on the design of the courses in which s/he is involved. Salary Range: The Associate will receive a salary of $53,000 along with benefits and a research allowance of $2,000 per annum. Items to Send: Candidates should apply with a letter of application, a CV, three letters of reference, a statement of research interests, a statement of teaching philosophy, and samples of relevant output (in the form of research papers, course syllabi, and/or software) at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/10598 Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2018, and applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. Deadline: January 15, 2018 Contact: Candidates are invited to contact Prof. Roger Moseley at music-search@cornell.edu with any questions.
