Institution: Open University Position: Lecturer in Music General Information: Start Date: 1 October 2018 Duration of post: Until 31 December 2020 Working hours: 37 hours per week Qualifications: The successful candidate will also have a track record of successful research and/or firm and detailed plans for future research, with clear potential for REF submission in a field of music studies. The lecturer will be expected to contribute to the teaching and research culture of the Music Discipline and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and to support interdisciplinary work in the University. Education, qualifications and training • A good honours degree with content relevant to the study of music. • A PhD or other equivalent qualification, completed or about to be obtained. Knowledge, work and other relevant experience Essential: • Specialist knowledge in the areas of music theory/analysis and popular music. • The ability and readiness to prepare printed and online teaching materials and to support modules in presentation through online and face-to-face teaching, the preparation of assessment materials, and participation in Quality Assurance and examination processes. • A willingness and ability to contribute to teaching on a range of modules, including some that will be beyond the post-holder’s normal areas of specialisation. • A track record of successful research and/or firm and detailed plans for future research with clear potential for REF submission in a field of music studies. • An understanding of the pedagogy for teaching music in HE, including an understanding of the nature of the Open University’s distance and online teaching. Desirable: • Experience or knowledge of distance or adult education. • Understanding of the nature of the Faculty’s qualifications and modules. • Research outputs or planned outputs which include clear knowledge transfer activities and/or activities with demonstrable impact (as defined by the Research Excellence Framework). • The ability to contribute teaching and/or research in music technology. • An interdisciplinary approach to research and/or teaching, with a willingness to think across genre/subject boundaries. • The ability to contribute to maintaining and raising the profile of the Department and the Faculty (e.g. through outreach activities or funding applications). • Experience of activities designed to widen participation in HE. Personal abilities and qualities Essential: • The ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. • The ability to work as an effective and collegial member of a team, with the communication and inter-personal skills needed to encourage co-operation and co- ordination of work. • Efficiency, organisational skills (including the ability to work to deadlines) and the ability to use IT. • Commitment to the ideals of The Open University, including widening participation in HE and equality and diversity issues. Job Description/Responsibilities: OU Music is recruiting a lecturer to assist in redesigning undergraduate offerings that develop core skills in notating and analysing the materials of music. The successful candidate will have expertise in music theory/analysis and in popular music, and will contribute to the production and maintenance of current and future OU music modules. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching and research culture of the Music Discipline and Faculty and support interdisciplinary work in the University. You will be expected to become involved in a range of specific departmental activities, including: • Contributing to the department in general terms as a scholar of music; • Contributing to module production and maintenance on current and future OU music modules, especially within the areas of music theory/analysis and popular music; • Taking a part in the assessment and examination of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and postgraduate students; • Producing research and participating in departmental conferences and seminars; • Supervising postgraduates working on musicological, ethnomusicological and/or interdisciplinary research projects; • Taking on leadership and administrative roles, as required by the Head of School; • Playing an active role within the Faculty. OU Music is currently redesigning undergraduate offerings that develop core skills in reading and writing music notation, and in understanding and analysing the materials of music, so the post-holder should be able to teach in these areas as well as in some area or areas of popular music.
