Institution: Michigan State University Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory (Tenure-Stream) General Information: The College of Music at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Music Theory beginning Fall 2019. The Music Theory Area at Michigan State University interacts with nearly every student in the College of Music: undergraduate majors in performance, music education, jazz studies, and composition; Master’s and Doctoral students in performance, composition, and conducting; and Master’s students in music theory, whom we prepare with the analytical, practical, research, and pedagogical skills needed for doctoral study and for successful music theory teaching at the collegiate level. We seek a dynamic scholar-teacher to join our faculty. Qualifications: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: -a completed doctorate in music theory at the time of appointment; -a strong commitment to music theory pedagogy and successful university-level teaching experience; -an emerging or established record of scholarly productivity, including conference presentations and publications; -demonstrated ability to teach effectively at multiple levels, including in the undergraduate core; in junior- and senior-level electives; in courses for graduate performers, conductors, and composers; and in specialized seminars for Master’s students in music theory. DESIRED QUALIFICIATIONS: -research specialization(s) that would add to those of our current music theory faculty; -demonstrated success teaching a variety of subjects such as aural skills, counterpoint, undergraduate core theory, 20th- and 21st-century techniques, Schenkerian analysis, and keyboard skills. Job Description/Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities are likely to include parts of the undergraduate music theory and aural skills cores, specialized courses for Master’s students majoring in music theory, and analysis courses for Master’s and Doctoral students throughout the college. The successful candidate is expected to advance a nationally known research agenda in the form of publications and presentations. In addition, the candidate will contribute to the advising of Master’s and Doctoral students, participate in the administration of exams, and play an active role in charting the future direction of the Music Theory Area. Additional responsibilities include committee service, recruiting, grant writing, and collaboration with colleagues in other areas of the College of Music.
