Job Description/Responsibilities: The Amherst College Department of Music invites applications for a two-year full-time visiting position in composition at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor, beginning July 1, 2020. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. In seeking a colleague who thrives in the interdisciplinary context of a vibrant liberal arts college, we invite applications from specialists in composition, broadly defined, and who can offer introductory and advanced courses in composition, courses in musicianship, theory, or other subjects required for the music major, and who can supervise senior composition projects in a variety of musical styles. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or D.M.A. in hand by the start of the appointment.
