POSITION: Assistant Professor in Music Theory, Tenure-track
RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibility includes teaching traditional undergraduate music theory and aural skills courses. Additional coursework will include jazz theory/history courses, and ethnomusicology courses. Tenure-track faculty are expected to advise and mentor students, serve on committees, perform departmental duties and perform university service. A completed doctorate, evidence of excellence in teaching, and continuing scholarly/creative activity are expected in order to qualify for tenure and promotion.
QUALIFICATIONS: A completed Doctorate in Music is preferred, however, ABD candidates will be considered. Additionally, a strong record of excellence in teaching undergraduate music theory courses and scholarly achievement must be evident.

The Theory Department of the Eastman School of Music seeks a full-time aural skills (musicianship) instructor. This three-year renewable (non-tenure track) faculty position at the rank of Instructor will begin fall, 2004. The successful candidate must have a graduate degree in music theory and considerable experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in solfege (both fixed and moveable do), dictation (melodic and harmonic), rhythmic reading and keyboard skills, in a curriculum embracing Renaissance through post-tonal repertoire. The ideal candidate will have both a strong background not only in practical musicianship and theory, but also in either composition or performance, or both. Tenure-Track Faculty Positions in Music Informatics Starting Fall 2004
The School of Informatics is one of the most important academic initiatives at
Indiana University in the past 30 years. Informatics is the study of information
and information technology in its applied and social contexts. The State of
Indiana has committed new base funding that will allow the School to hire in
excess of 30 new faculty at the Bloomington campus over the next few years.
Tenure-track positions at all ranks are available in Music Informatics (a part
of the Human-Computer Interaction Design Program). Applications from candidates
with expertise in areas such as representation, classification, search and
retrieval, databases and data mining, formal models, music recognition, music
digital libraries and indexing and metadata are welcome. Formal training in
music is strongly desired. In addition to courses directly related to the
candidate's research expertise, candidates who can teach core areas of the
informatics curriculum are preferred. Senior candidates should have a strong
record of funding.
The School has strong ties to domain areas including Music, Education, Computer
Science, Cognitive Science, and the Physical and Natural Sciences; joint
appointments are possible. We have excellent work conditions including low
teaching loads, attractive salaries, and world-class computing and library
facilities, including the Variations2 Digital Music Library. Located on the
rolling wooded hills of southern Indiana, Bloomington is a culturally thriving

North Carolina School of the Arts
DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC
The North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) is seeking candidates for the
position of the School of Music Dean. This person will also serve as Executive
Director of the Fletcher Opera Institute. The preferred starting date for the
appointment is July 1, 2004.
NCSA is recognized throughout the world as an exceptional training school for
young artists. Opened in 1965 as the first state-supported residential
conservatory in the nation, it trains students from high school through graduate
school for careers in the performing and visual arts in five professional
schools: Dance, Design & Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama,
Filmmaking and Music.
The School of Music has established itself as an outstanding educational
institution, with 35 full-time and 12 adjunct faculty, and a staff of 13. A new
$13 million complex, including faculty studios, rehearsal rooms and a 300-seat
chamber music hall was completed in 2003. The School of Music enrolls
approximately 260 music majors, comprised of roughly 15% graduate level, 50%
undergraduate and 35% high school students. The School offers Bachelor’s and
Master’s Degrees, the College Arts Diploma, the Professional Artist Certificate
and the High School Diploma. The A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute offers advanced
training at the post graduate level for a small number of exceptional young
singers.
The Dean of the School of Music must manage and oversee the personnel and budget
of both the School of Music and the Fletcher Opera Institute; work closely with
the Provost to maintain a diverse faculty and student body on the highest
academic and artistic level; manage and oversee student recruitment and
enrollment; oversee the management of the Community Music School and the Summer
School programs of the School of Music; spearhead fundraising initiatives and
pursue strong relationships with current and potential benefactors; and develop
and manage the implementation of special performance projects.

accordance with the terms of the Collective Agreement. At least one appointment
will be of eight-months duration with responsibilities largely in teaching.

One-Year, Full-Time Position in African-American Music, 2004-2005
The Department of Music at Tufts University announces a one-year, full-time
position in African-American Music, beginning September 2004.
We seek a creative scholar with broad interests and evidence of strong teaching
abilities. Required: Ph.D. or near completion; specialty in ethnomusicology or
musicology preferred. Two courses per semester, including a course for
non-majors on African-American Music. Other courses might include a graduate
seminar in Jazz Studies, History of Rock 'n' Roll, or Music in the U.S.A. since
1945.
