1. Hypertext links to MTO files
The recent Special Issue of MTO (2.2) included a hypertext version of the plain-text table of contents, which is distributed to all subscribers at each release. Beginning
with this issue (2.3) the hypertext TOC will include links to all items. Following the hypertext headings in the TOC for announcements, dissertations, or employment leads to the beginning of the appropriate files, where readers will find a menu leading to individual listings. Additionally, following TOC hypertext links for individual listings leads to the relevant locations in the linked files. We hope that the new hypertext TOC will meet with subscribers' approval.

2. mto-talk
As subscribers learned from a recent posting, our mto-talk moderator, Claire Boge, has decided not to continue in that position. Robert Judd, MTO Manager, will take over the list until a new moderator is appointed.
Claire is the SMT Newsletter Editor, a demanding post that has become the more time-consuming now that SMT has begun to offer an online (Web) version of the Newsletter. It was exactly a year ago that Claire
became 'talk' moderator and she has done an outstanding job. Anyone who has managed a large mailing list like mto-talk, which has over 1000 subscribers, knows the time it takes to keep the mailing addresses up to
date and error free, and to answer queries. I recall, too, that when Claire began as moderator she even provided useful logs of postings to the list when she suspected that some messages had not reached
subscribers. She has been an actively contributing member of the SMT Networking Committee, and will continue to offer suggestions regarding the online Newsletter. We thank Claire for her help in getting
mto-talk off the ground and sustaining it, and wish her continued success as Newsletter Editor.
mto-talk has been very active lately with dialog on the New Musicology essays published in the Special Issue. I am gratified to see the forum come to life after intermittent dormant periods. The exchange on
mto-talk has been enlightening and has helped to clarify some of the difficult issues involved. I encourage those who have contributed to the dialog to continue, and those who have not contributed to begin to participate in the thought-provoking discussion.
Subscribers should be aware that the mto-talk postings are available, fully indexed by subject, author, date, and thread, on the mto-talk Hypermail page at the URL http://societymusictheory.org/www-talk/mto/
current/index.html. Those who do not have access to the Web may retrieve an unindexed, chronologically ordered file of all postings to mto-talk via FTP, at the site societymusictheory.org, in the file mto-talk.current, which is in the directory pub/mto/mto-talk. Also in that directory are past months' files of collected mto-talk postings, named by month (e.g. mto-talk.feb95). Files can also be retrieved by gopher, as well as through our FileServer, mto-serv, by addressing an email message to mto-serv@societymusictheory.org, and putting the following line in the message:
send FileName
Replace "FileName" with, for example, mto-talk.current, or mto-talk.MONTHxx, where MONTH is a three-letter abbreviation for a month, and xx two digits of a year.

3. UCSB supports MTO
At the beginning of the current academic year (fall, 1995), I announced that UCSB had awarded MTO a grant of $3,000 for producing the journal. Recently, on reviewing our record this year the College of Letters and Science at UCSB has recognized our accomplishments in the world of scholarly electronic publishing by awarding MTO a grant of $3,000 for each of the next two years, to be used to pay for subeditorial work, technical assistance, equipment, and supplies. SMT and the staff of MTO are extremely grateful for the University's confidence and generous support.

4. NetAds
Subscribers may recall the announcement in a previous issue about MTO NetAds, approved at the 1995 Annual Meeting of the SMT. NetAds, in the words of the approved proposal, are "announcements of
availablility (including pricing) [rather] than elaborate, hard-sell solicitations." MTO subscribers, or anyone, may submit a NetAd for inclusion in MTO. Each will be subject to review by the MTO
Co-editorial Board and, in case of questions, by the Networking and Publications Committees. Appropriate NetAds would be, for instance, notifications of products or services that are relevant to the needs of professional music theorists, e.g. analysis software, ear-training, written theory drill, music notation, and
publications related to the discipline (texts, books, journals). Ads should be submitted to the General Editor, and may not be posted to mto-talk. A special section of the table of contents will list the ads, whose contents will be available through the usual means (hypertext link, mto-serv, FTP, gopher). Anyone wishing to submit an ad should contact the General Editor (mto-editor@societymusictheory.org). SMT offers the service free of charge and will receive no proceeds from sales.
