Abstract:

An archaeology of C20 concepts of style in musicology (ie. both music theory and music history) and in related disciplines, especially art history, cultural criticism, and literary theory. Suggestions that style is a word concept that we all use all the time, but invariably without definition; that style is more than a synonym of "form"; that our use of the term assumes a variety of ideological positions; that a heightened awareness of these positions is desirable.
